Dr Angus Jones’ Research
Angus is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter and diabetes consultant at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. His research focuses improving treatment of Type 1 and 2 diabetes. He leads research studies funded by Diabetes UK and the NHS National Institute for Health Research to improve classification and early treatment of type 1 and 2 diabetes. In many people first diagnosed with diabetes it is not clear if they have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. This is important as the treatment of these conditions is very different, with those with Type 1 diabetes needing rapid insulin treatment – they may become very unwell if they do not receive insulin. This research is using large existing and new studies to identify which features and blood tests are most helpful in identifying if a person has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. The research will combine the most useful features to produce a website and smartphone clinical calculator (called a clinical prediction model) to accurately diagnose what type of diabetes a person has so that they can receive the correct treatment.
